Together Against Food Waste: Young Impact Day Connects Saanenland Schools
Young Impact Day 2024 brought together 120 students from public and private schools in the Saanenland. The focus was on the mindful handling of food resources. Through interactive workshops, the young participants discovered creative and forward-thinking approaches to nutrition.
From Mealworms to Food Waste Muffins
In diverse learning sessions, participants gained fascinating insights into sustainable food concepts: At Swiss Insects, students showed remarkable openness in tasting seasoned grasshoppers and chocolate-covered mealworms as future protein sources.
At the workshop of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), young participants transformed bread and overripe fruit into delicious muffins and discovered food waste chips.
At Madame Frigo, participants learned about the successful concept of food-sharing refrigerators and explored the background of food waste issues.
Finally, Agro-Image provided direct insights into local agriculture. Seasonal topics such as the importance of crop rotation, as well as various labels and forms of agriculture, were explored through playful learning.
The bakery earlybeck provided catering with a forward-thinking concept: old bread was transformed into new, tasty and crispy sourdough rolls. The accompanying chocolate sticks made from fair-trade chocolate impressively demonstrated the potential of complete cocoa bean utilization.
Successful Exchange in the Fight Against Food Waste
"Young Impact Day has shown how valuable the collaboration between private and public schools can be," says project leader Chantal Reichenbach. "Through shared exchange, the young people learned about various aspects of food production and developed new perspectives on sustainable nutrition."
The Idea Behind Young Impact
Young Impact is a project initiated by Impact Gstaad with the aim of bringing the topic of sustainability closer to the younger generation and to better understand their concerns and problems. As the first cross-institutional project, Young Impact creates a unique meeting platform for students from public and private educational institutions. In addition to the public school, the J.F. Kennedy International School and the Institut Le Rosey also participate in the Young Impact workshops. The project promotes dialogue and interaction between students and teachers and facilitates an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability.
